In this article, we will discuss about the UN Guiding principles for Business and Human Rights. They are strategy tools that are used by enterprises to manifest corporate social responsibility.

History

The United Nations Human Rights Council set a series of Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights. Professor John Ruggie of Harvard Kennedy School was the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Business and Human Rights who developed the Guiding Principles from 2005 to 2011. The Principles were finally endorsed on June 2011.

An Idea

The principles set a global parameter on the roles of government and business houses to make sure that organizations abide by human rights in the relationships with their employees and in their operations.

The Guiding Principles speak in details about the three pillars that the professor had underlined in 2008. The three pillars of the United Nations are Protect, Respect and Remedy.
